"Without EMBRACE I would not even be in the position to have accepted this job." - Maggie Sullivan

My name is Maggie Sullivan and I have the immense privilege of being an EMBRACE educator. I started my journey in the educational field in 2010 as a Freshman at Benedictine College as an Elementary Education major. Upon graduating in 2014, I was blessed to work at St. Ann Catholic School in Prairie Village. I worked there for 5 years teaching 1st grade, Kindergarten, and being a part of their resource team. In 2019 I made the decision to stay home with my two little ones and I have spent the last two years soaking up their little giggles, cuddles, and all the fun.

It was during the first month of the pandemic that I very excitedly applied to the EMBRACE program. At that time we all were still hoping that COVID-19 would come to a halt during the summer months, but as we all know now, that was not the case. This past year has been a crazy ride of ups and downs and I was not even in the classroom. My husband and I often talk about how blessed we were that I was already staying at home, but being a stay at home mom is already hard. When you add a global pandemic in the mix, and going back to school, there were times where everything was a mess. Let's be honest it was a mess most of the time. That mess is okay though. I watched my children grow, I got to be a teacher for my son, and we got to spend more quality time together as a family.

Even though my family and I played a balancing act to make sure I could get all my classwork done, I absolutely loved having classes this past year. Not only have I learned a lot and become more passionate about special education, but I also got to be part of a wonderful community. It was through being a part of the EMBRACE community that I knew it was time for me to return to the classroom. I was lucky enough to be offered the Resource Teacher position at St. Paul Catholic School in Olathe, and I cannot wait to start! I am ready to apply the knowledge of what I have learned through EMBRACE, I am excited to help the kids and teachers in whatever way possible, and I am happy to have found such a wonderful community for my family to be a part of.

Without EMBRACE I would not even be in the position to have accepted this job and I cannot thank all those involved with this program enough. Making sure that our Catholic School teachers are able to serve all students is so important and EMBRACE is helping to make that dream a reality.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14.
