Most of you no doubt have heard the old adage, “If you want to make God Laugh, tell him your plans.” Well, I do not know if God is laughing or not, but He certainly had other plans for me! If you would have asked me 10 years ago when I was teaching 5th grade at John Paul II if I thought about being principal, I would have laughed and said “no way”!
Now here I sit, able to tell you that becoming the principal of a Catholic school, THIS Catholic school, has been the best decision I ever made. Being able to live out your faith on a daily basis with an entire building of students and staff is the greatest reward. John Paul II is a “hidden gem” on the corner of 71st and Metcalf and I am proud to be a part of the community.
Learning styles, needs, backgrounds, obstacles and environment all need to be considered by teachers today when lesson planning. There is not a “typical student” in a classroom anymore. We are very fortunate at JP2 to employ a full time learning center teacher that assists classrooms with individualizing education for our students that display a wide range of abilities. This year, thanks to a grant from EMBRACE, we were able to hire an Enrichment Coordinator that has been valuable in offering a more challenging curriculum for our students that display a need. Being able to offer a more individual approach to learning is something we are proud of. We never want to have to turn a student away because we can’t meet their needs in our building.
Thanks to EMBRACE, their support and resources, we are equipped with the tools to help all our students’ individual talents develop and shine!
