The Gift of Wonder and Awe: My Brother Max

“Mitch, can you get Max a new show?” exclaims my Mom as she means for me to turn on a new episode of Sesame Street on the TV. My family is faced with many challenges related to Max. Max is my 15-year-old brother who has Cerebral Palsy. Although there are many challenges, my life with Max is amazing!

Think of one of the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wonder and Awe. This means understanding how amazing God’s creation really is. God wants you to respect his creation. I see how amazing my brother is. Some people think of him as this weird person. No, he is just like you! He just happens to have Cerebral Palsy. When I wake up in the morning, I get ready then go downstairs to assist my Mom to get Max in his chair. Then I take him down to the bus so my Mom can get ready. To be able to start my day off with Max is wonderful. One of the triumphs of having Max as a brother is that we get to go on fun trips and get to cut lines. I remember we were in line to get on our plane and we were totally not going to make it! The officers let us skip the line all the way to the front! Also, we were at a MLB game in Arizona for spring training and the players were signing baseballs. We got to go first to get autographs.

Having Max as a brother gives me the seventh gift of the Holy Spirit; Wonder and Awe. God wants you to respect and realize how amazing His creation is. I truly believe Max has brought our family closer together. Max is a blessing to our family and we will always cherish him.
